Man Beats And Stabs Neighbor For Playing Loud Music
A 33-year-old unemployed, John Ena, charged with stabbing his neighbour with a bottle on her head for playing loud music, was on Wednesday arraigned in Lagos.
Ena, a resident of No. 13, Palace Road, Alagbado, Lagos, is being tried for breach of the peace and assault at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 2, at his residence.
He said that the accused unlawfully assaulted his neighbour, one Miss Elizabeth Okpaku, by stabbing her with a bottle on her head.
“The accused stabbed the complainant with a bottle on her head for playing loud music.’’
Olatunde said that the accused unlawfully entered the apartment of the complainant to stab and damage her property.
“The accused forcefully entered the complainant’s room and ordered her to reduce the volume of her DVD player, claiming that it was too loud and was
disturbing him in his room. “The complainant refused to comply, saying that the volume was not loud, so the accused forcefully stopped the music
by throwing the DVD player outside and also damaged her generator set.
“He also descended on her by beating and stabbing her with a bottle.’’ The offences, Olatunde said, contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for convicted offenders.
The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr Aka Bashorun, adjourned the case to Sept. 21, for mention. (NAN)

Militants Take Over Pipeline Vandalism In Lagos — Police
The attack on a team of policemen in Owutu area of Ikorodu, Lagos, in the early hours of Monday, during which three policemen were shot dead and others injured, was said to have been carried out by militants-turned vandals.
This is just as the policeman, who managed to escape from the scene of the shooting, attributed his survival to his name.
The surviving policeman, a Sergeant identified as Fortunate Endurance Imasuen, according to a family friend who spoke on condition, said: “My name, Fortunate, saved me. For the first time in my life, I knew the meaning of my name.
“I am indeed fortunate and I thank God for my parents who gave me such name.”
Sergeant Imasuen, said to be in a stable condition yesterday, was reportedly shot in the leg.
Impeccable sources disclosed that the militants, who attacked the policemen, were clad in black shirts and trousers, with red bands tied on their heads.
They were reportedly alerted by their colleagues who were apprehended by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, for onward transfer to the Anti-Pipeline Vandalism squad.
At press time, the whereabouts of the three policemen said to have been shot by the vandals were yet unknown.
Information at Vanguard’s disposal revealed that trouble was allegedly caused by operatives of the SARS who were deplored to the area to checkmate activities of vandals.
A total of 150 SARS operatives were reportedly deplored to Ishawo area to complement efforts of policemen from Owutu Division.
It was also gathered that SARS operatives pin-down point was different from that of policemen from Owutu.
Between SARS, Owutu police
Report had it that while a team of policemen from Owutu allegedly allowed the vandals passage, their colleagues from SARS insisted on handing them over to the Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit inspite of explanation by the vandals that they had allegedly paid an unspecified amount to some of their colleagues.
The argument reportedly went on for about 30 minuites, when all of a sudden, their colleagues, numbering over 50, stormed the area and opened fire on the unsuspecting policemen, killing three of them on the spot.
Although one of the vandals was reportedly shot dead, his body was said to have been taken away in one of his colleagues’ operational vehicles, alongside that of the dead policemen.
Police reacts
Spokesperson of Lagos State Police Command, Patricia Amadin, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the attack.
She said: “ The policemen encountered an attack by armed men suspected to be militants at about 3a.m., Monday.
“Meanwhile, the command is on the lookout for three of its personnel discovered missing after the encounter, while an intensive manhunt is on for the fleeing felons.
“The command appeals to the public to volunteer in-formation and report cases of pesons with gunshot wounds to the nearest station.”
Tragedy struck on Monday on Ishawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos State, after some Ijaw youths, suspected to be pipeline vandals, opened fire on policemen in the area, killing four.
While three of the deceased were attached to the Owutu Police Division, one was from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Driver Strips Unclad To Resist FRSC Arrest (picture)
The incident happened along the busy Marian Road in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
According to an eyewitness, the Unclad driver, whose vehicle registration number was Edo AUC 901 XS, came out of his vehicle and started behaving funny by removing his cloths.
The eyewitness, who identified himself as Raheem Bayoor, said officials of the FRSC were stunned by the behaviour of the driver and did not attempt to struggle with him as he resisted arrest.
Bayoor said, “The man just came out when the FRSC officials requested for his particulars and started pulling off his cloths. It is obvious that he was abnormal; a mad man behind the wheel.
“The FRSC officials were stunned and did not attempt to create any scene as it was obvious that the driver was ready for any rough encounter.”
When contacted, a furious state Commander of FRSC, Mr. Ikechukwu Igwe, said he had ordered his men to trace the driver through the vehicle and get him arrested.
“We will definitely get him,” he said.
There won’t be sacred cows in the war against corruption, says Buhari
Buhari said this at the opening session of the 45th Annual Accountants Conference and 50th Anniversary celebration of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria tagged “ICAN:Building on a legacy of service”.
The president, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs Anastasia Nwaobia, vowed to step up his anti-corruption campaign through the re-invigoration of all anti corruption agencies in the country.
He said that institutions such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission were key in his fight against corruption.
He said that the lack of prudence, transparency and honesty in the management of public resources had left Nigerians in a state of suffering and deprivation.
He called on the ICAN to assist his administration in reversing the trend by ensuring that the resources of government were duly accounted for with all sense of transparency.
“We are at the threshold of history where we must collectively take the destiny of the nation in our hands.
“As Nigerians, no one can love Nigeria like you and me. On our part, we will continue to lead by example, making efforts to live above board.
“As we strive to walk or talk,we will carry to its logical conclusions our initiative to overhaul the bureaucracy of the public sector in an effort to engender transparency and improve productivity in public governance.
“I assure you that persons found wanting will not be spared,” he said.
Buhari said with the huge number of resources at the country’s disposal, it’s citizens had no business being classified poor among comity of nations.
The president said his administration had commenced the process of rebuilding a better country for all through the enthronement of honesty in the management of public resources.
“As blessed as we are as a nation, Nigerians have no business being classified as poor.
“Yet, through the greed of some unpatriotic few, our commonwealth has been badly pillaged in the name of public service.
“Our ability as a nation to create wealth has increasingly been hampered by lack of prudence, transparency and honesty in the management of public resources by some of those entrusted with the duty of governance at all levels.
“This should not be allowed to continue. The nation ought and must leave the throes of poverty and underdevelopment. I do believe that as a people, we are naturally destined for greatness,” he said.
While admitting that the battle for the enthronement of the right values would be difficult, his administration was committed to effecting a change in the nation’s value system.
He expressed optimism that corruption would soon be a thing of the past. He reiterated his administration’s commitment in changing Nigeria for the better.
Earlier, the President of ICAN, Mr Samuel Deru, said that the nation’s economy needed surgical and drastic reforms beyond the solution of privatisation of government companies.
These reforms, he added, should begin with plugging of all revenue leakages, revisiting and redefining priorities, slashing of cost of governance and investing more in capital ventures.
“In spite of the current challenges, as a body, we are persuaded that integrity and public interest as cherished virtues, will continue to underlie good governance and economic prosperity.
“Accordingly, we will continue to defend these ideals, no matter the odds. To ensure this, we have set in motion strategies to re-engineer our processes in order to re-position the profession for greater value delivery,” he said.
Dere called on the government to make the budget cycle a subject of legislation, to enhance budgeting ethics and effective implementation processes.
