South Carolina- Deputy involved in throwing student across the room during arrest has been fired

Deputy Ben Fields, the police officer involved in a confrontation with an unnamed student at a South Carolina high school on Monday has been relieved of his duties on Wednesday as a result of the incident.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott during an interview with CNN said it was unfortunate about the incident but after watching the 3rd video that emerged, they had to let him go.

He said, the Police officer followed protocol until when he threw the girl across the room. He said according to their training and what's acceptable when taking a suspect down, they are required never to let go of a suspect during a confrontation or an arrest but that he violated that rule when he had at the desk and threw her thereby losing contact with her.

Lott also said that the teacher and the Assistant Principal thought what Deputy Fields did was right, he said they both agreed with him but that according to the Police training he didn't follow protocol.

The teacher said the student was on her phone during class and was asked to put her phone away but she refused. The Assistant Principal was called in the matter and repeated the same thing to the girl but again she refused. Then they asked her to leave the class, an instruction which she ignored, so they called in Deputy Fields to take her out of the class. Deputy Fields asked her to get up and leave the class, she ignired him, he repeated the request, again she ignored him and that was when he picked her up and threw her across the room
Lott said:

“When the officer puts his hands on her initially, she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist.” He did right when he tried to remove her from her desk but broke protocol when he threw her across the room"

He said Deputy Fields was sorry about how he handled the incident and wished he had handled it differently.

Deputy Fields' Lawyer is preparing to fight to have his client reinstated in the force.

Teenager attacked and stabbed to death in lunch break in Aberdeen

A teenage boy was stabbed to death in a lunchtime attack inside a school.
The pupil, who has not been named but is thought to have been a fifth year student, was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after he was attacked yesterday afternoon.


The shocking incident happened at the Cults Academy school in Aberdeen and reports suggest it happened in a hallway.

 Posting to Twitter, Aberdeen Police revealed they had launched a murder investigation following the attack.

    "An extensive investigation is underway & a 16-year-old male has been detained in relation to the incident & is assisting us with enquiries."

Chief Inspector Graeme Mackie said:

    "This is a shocking and extraordinary incident for Aberdeen and firstly our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who has sadly lost his life today.

    "A full and thorough enquiry is underway and there will be a police presence in the area for the foreseeable future.

    "We are working closely with the education authorities and wider community as I am sure this incident will be felt not only in Aberdeen but much further afield."

Aberdeen Council said: "It is with shock and sadness that we can confirm that a pupil of Cults Academy has died following an incident at the school earlier today.

"Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to the friends and family.

"We will be providing support to pupils, teachers, parents and the community in the coming days."

Man admits to the manslaughter/stabbing of a Nigerian in London

On Tuesday October 28, Evan Edwards (left) pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Babafemi Junaid, 22, (right) following a retrial at the Old Bailey.

Police were called at around 17:40hrs on Friday, 7 February 2014 to reports of a man stabbed. Upon arrival they found Babafemi suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was taken by London Ambulance Service to hospital but he later died that evening. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a single stab wound to the heart.

Babafemi became the inadvertent focus of an attack by a group after a disturbance on a 155 bus spilled out onto the street.

He was not on the bus but was waiting at the bus stop when the disturbance spilled out onto the pavement at Stockwell station. As he attempted to get away from the fracas he was targeted, chased and attacked by the group.

During the attack one of the attackers was witnessed waving a knife, Babafemi fell to the ground. He managed to run to his car which was a short distance away but, as a result of his injuries, crashed his car into the back of a bus soon after.

The same group that initially attacked him then set upon him again opening three of its doors to kick and punch him until bystanders came over to intervene.

Babefemi's attackers then fled the scene.

Detectives launched a murder investigation and which resulted in a number of people getting arrested including Edwards who was arrested on Thursday, 13 February 2014 at his place of work.

"This was a horrific incident which culminated in a violent disturbance on a bus and sadly led to a young man losing his life. I hope today's guilty plea goes some way to helping Babafemi's family move on from what has been an extremely distressing experience." Detective Inspector David Reid of Homicide and Major Crime Command, said

Edwards will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, 24 November for manslaughter and violent disorder.

Taraba Tribunal Sacks Speaker Abel Diah and Nullifies Election

The Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Jalingo on Wednesday nullified the election of the Speaker of the Taraba state House of Assembly, Abel Diah, of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to set aside a certificate of Return earlier issued to the speaker.
The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Taraba state had earlier declared Mr. Diah, the winner of the April eleven elections for Mbamga Constituency in the state House of Assembly.

Following the pronouncement, the All Progressives Congress Candidate in the constituency, Emmanuel Bongo, went to the elections tribunal challenging the victory of the Speaker.

The petitioner argued that elections conducted in nine polling units in Mbamga constituency were marred by enormous irregularities.
Delivering its judgment, the National and Houses of Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal ruled that elections in eight out of the nine polling units, challenged by the petitioner, were conducted against the provision of the 2010 Electoral Act.

According to the tribunal, polls conducted in the eight polling units were null and void.
The tribunal declared the elections inconclusive and ordered INEC to conduct fresh polls within 90 days beginning from Wednesday in the eight affected polling units.

The judges ordered the electoral umpire to set aside the certificate of return earlier issued to the Speaker.
With the judgment, the APC candidate, Emmanuel Bongo, leads with 1,440 votes.
Speaking to Journalist after the ruling, the APC Chairman in the state, Hassan Ardo, thanked the tribunal saying the judgment was based on facts.

On the other hand, the counsel to the speaker declined comment

Emir Sanusi Strips Lamido Bayero Of traditional Title

The emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, has stripped the eldest son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, Lamido Bayero, of his traditional title of Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that a few months after ascending the throne, the new emir wrote to Mr. Bayero, seeking him to return to his duty as Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.

Palace sources told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Bayero’s refusal to either reply the letter or report to the palace, angered the emir.
The issue however died down when Mr. Bayero was appointed managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

But when Mr. Bayero was recently relieved of his duty as managing director of the NPA by President Muhammadu Buhari, the emir directed the Emirate Council to write to Mr. Bayero again.

“When a letter was written to him again, he neither responded nor appeared in person to explain his reasons.
“His Highness first reasoned that the local government of Gwale was too important to be left vacant, and so he elevated the son of Emir Inuwa to be the district head.

“And now the title of Ciroma is also stripped,” a top palace source said.
Perhaps in order to douse tension in the palace, sources said, the emir however appointed Mr. Bayero’s younger brother, Nasiru Bayero, to replace him as the new Ciroman Kano.

A statement by Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sunusi, said the removal and the subsequent replacement were with immediate effect.
Mr. Bayero was touted to as the heir apparent of the Kano emirship throne but lost to the current emir, who was then holding a mid-cadre title of Dan Majen Kano.

Since losing the coveted seat to Mr. Sanusi, Mr. Lamido banished himself to Abuja and refused to pledge allegiance to the new emir as provided by the tradition.

Despite concerted efforts by some notable personalities in the state to convince Mr. Bayero to pay homage to the new emir, Mr. Bayero stoutly rejected.
