Delta State University Arrests Man For Writing Exams For girlfriend

The Delta State University has nabbed a Mechanical Engineering student of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Inneh Aisosa, for alleged impersonation during an examination​.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of DELSU, Eddy Agbure, on Wednesday, Mr. Aisosa was nabbed on February 23 while writing examination for Onakpoma Oghenetega, a 400-level student of the Abraka campus of the university.

The statement said the suspect with matriculation number 0452/2010, came into the university in a Toyota Camry with registration number ABH 417 GW to write the exam for Miss Oghenetega (matriculation number FOS/12/13/212931), who is alleged to be his girlfriend.

It said Mr. Aisosa was apprehended by members of DELSU Examination Monitoring Group in collaboration with invigilators.

“With this development, it is obvious that some of our unserious-minded students have introduced new tactics to perpetrate examination malpractice,” the statement said.

“While law abiding and committed students of the university are busy reading very hard for their examinations, the lazy ones are busy engaging mercenaries from within and outside the university to write examinations for them with the sole aim of getting good grades.

“This is totally unacceptable and management of the university will not relax in the relentless was against this academic fraud.”

The statement said the university authorities vowed to deal with criminally-minded students in the war against examination malpractices.

Nigerian Man stopped From UK Flight Over prayer Message On His Phone

A British-born Nigerian was removed from an Easyjet flight at Luton airport after a fellow passenger read a message that mentions 'prayer' on his mobile phone and alerted cabin crew, who raised alarm with the police.

Laolu Opebiyi was using WhatsApp to arrange a conference call prayer session with friends, as the Amsterdam-bound flight was waiting to take off at Luton airport on Thursday February 25 when a passenger next to him questioned him about message that included the word 'prayer' asking "What do you mean by prayer?"

The 40-year-old Nigerian-born business analyst from London explained to the passenger that he was preparing to pray with friends. Few minutes later, he was pulled off the flight by two firearms officers. It is thought the man misread the name of Mr Opebiyi's prayer group “ISI men” – which stands for "iron sharpens iron” from a Bible quote – as Isis.

Mr Opebiyi said: "That guy doesn’t know me and within two minutes he’s judging me. Even if I was a Muslim, it was pretty unfair the way I was treated. If we keep on giving into this kind of bigotry and irrational fear, I dare say that the terrorists will have achieved their aim."

Mr Opebiyi was taken into questioning by police and quizzed about his Christian faith and where he attends church. He was forced to hand over his phone and password so officers could check his communication. He was eventually freed and allowed to catch another flight about three hours later.

Seven other passengers reportedly got off the flight fearing a terror threat and also took the next plane, Guardian reports.

A spokeswoman for Bedfordshire Police said: "Officers attended and a passenger was removed from the flight as part of the enquiries. Officers notified easyJet that they were satisfied that there was no concern around the passenger travelling."

A spokeswoman for easyJet who apologised over the incident said: "Easyjet can confirm that following concerns raised by passengers, the captain of flight EZY2151 from Luton to Amsterdam requested the assistance of the authorities who took the decision to disembark and question the passenger. The safety and security of its passengers and crew is our highest priority which means that is a security concern is raised we will always investigate it as a precautionary measure. After questioning by the authorities, the passenger was cleared to complete his journey so easyJet arranged a later easyJet flight for him. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to the passenger"

The officers cleared Mr Opebiyi for flight but the pilot refused to let him on and he was made to wait a further three hours to board the next flight to Amsterdam. He said that he is aftraind that he is on a terrorist watchlist.

"I stand in uncertainty about my freedom of movement in the UK" he said.

former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah Loses Bid To Stop Bulletproof Cars Probe

A Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by a former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, against the Attorney General of the Federation and three others.

Justice Okon Abang, who dismissed Oduah’s suit for want of jurisdiction today, ordered her to pay a cost of N15,000 to the AGF.
Oduah had filed the suit in August last year praying the court to restrain agencies of the Federal Government from questioning or prosecuting her over the purchase of two armoured BMW vehicles at a cost of N255m by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority under her watch as the Aviation Minister in 2013.

In her suit, Oduah claimed to have already been probed and exonerated by the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and urged Justice Abang to declare that any further probe would amount to violating her fundamental rights.

The respondents in the suit were the AGF, the EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission and the Inspector General of Police.
Oduah alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress intended to use the respondents to persecute her, being a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

She claimed that the Federal Government had perfected plans to try prominent members of the PDP on trump up charges in a special Lagos State High Court, so as to turn the country into a one-party state.
She begged the court to restrain the respondents from unleashing repression against her.
But the EFCC denied doing the bidding of the APC, claiming that it was independent.
It furnished the court with a petition dated October 18, 2013 written by a lawyer from the chambers of Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), calling for Oduah’s investigation.

The EFCC disclosed that the said petition was captioned, ‘Request for Investigation of Economic and Financial Crimes of the sum of N255m by Aviation Minister, Ms. Stella Oduah’.
The EFCC urged the court to dismiss Oduah’s suit.
But in his judgment, Justice Abang dismissed the EFCC’s objection for not complying with Order 8 Rule 1 of the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure.
“The EFCC did not file any opposition in line with the law,” Justice Abang held.
The judge, however, upheld the preliminary objection filed by the AGF, who challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court in Lagos to entertain Oduah’s suit.
Counsel for the AGF, T.A. Gazali, had contended that since the rights violation that Oduah alleged did not happen in Lagos, it would be a violation of Section 46(1) of the constitution and Order 2 Rule 1 of the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure to entertain the case in Lagos.

“From the whole of the applicant’s averments, there is nowhere she mentioned that her right was or is being breached by the respondents within the territorial space called Lagos.
“There is nothing to show that the applicant was invited, arrested or detained in Lagos by any of the respondents in the suit.
“The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos cannot assume jurisdiction to entertain alleged breach of fundamental rights that did not take place in Lagos State,” Gazali had argued.
Justice Abang upheld Gazali’s argument and dismissed Oduah’s case.
The judge also held that if the Federal Government had any valid reason to arraign Oduah in a Lagos State High Court as she alleged, it would not amount a violation of her right.
Meanwhile, in another judgment, Justice Abang also refused a prayer to stop the EFCC and the Department of State Services from arresting and probing a former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Affairs and the Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Kingsley Kuku.
The judge dismissed Kuku’s suit for lacking in merit, but restrained the respondents from detaining him beyond 48 in contravention of Section 35(4)(5) of the Constitution.

Dokpesi re-arraigns by EFCC over alleged N2.1bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC today re-arraigned former chairman of DAAR communications Plc, Raymond Dokpesi before Justice John Tsoho of the federal high court, Abuja, over a six-count charge of criminal breach of public procurement law to the tune of N2.1bn, the same charges filed against him in December.

During the hearing, Dokpesi pleaded not guilty to all charges. His counsel, Wole Olanipekun, Dokpesi’s lawyer, asked the presiding judge to allow him maintain the bail he was granted by Justice Kolawole on December 14. He said his client had been of good behaviour since the bail was granted.

After listening to the counsel, the judge ruled that the bail granted Dokpesi be maintained. He adjourned the case to March 2 and 3 for commencement of trial.

Lagos-- Pipeline vandals kill two naval officers

Two naval officers and a boat operator were killed in a recent face-off between the joint security forces and pipeline vandals around Ishawo/Arepo area of Ikorodu, Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has been told.

Men of the Nigerian Army told Ambode yesterday that the incident occurred during Operation Awatshe where 15 suspected vandals were arrested and over 2,000 50-litre jerry cans seized and 36 vehicles impounded.

Meanwhile in Ibadan, Oyo State, three men were on Tuesday granted bail by the Federal High Court after being charged for alleged vandalism of pipelines.

Ambode who said that the state would no longer condone vandalism directed the Nigerian Army, Police and other security personnel to immediately intensify arrest of suspected vandals and cultists in the state.

Commanding Officer of 174 Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Julius Ogbebo had told Ambode during an inspection tour of Ishawo/Arepo on Tuesday, that the joint forces had recovered Little Palace Hotel, one of the locatons the vandals often used to commit their criminal activities in the area.

Ogbedo said: “Also sir, we have recovered over 36 vehicles and we have more than 15 suspects. Some of them have been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for prosecution and further action.

So far, we have tried to garrison Ishawo and Arepo but still the vandals have not relented in their activities.

Last week, we lost two of our Naval personnel and a boat operator,” he said.

The governor, who commended the security forces, said that it was high time the government had deployed all of its might to clampdown on the vandals and other criminals.

He said: “I would like to use this platform to give a very strong warning to vandals and even cultists that are parading themselves on the streets of Lagos. Just recently, we heard that the fingers of some of our men in the Task Force were chopped off by some hoodlums.

“I am using this platform to direct our security forces that they should go ahead to use appropriate force to mitigate such incidents in the overall interest of all of us while we we are upholding the rule of law,” he said.

Commending Operation Awatshe since their deployment to the axis last year, Ambode said: “I have come here personally with heads of security agencies and the security council members in Lagos state to first appreciate the work of security agencies that have been posted here since last October and to also commend you for the improvement we have made since the time that you commenced operation here.”
