Senate Unity Forum Clamour for Saraki’s impeachment as assets declaration trial beckons

The senators of the ‘Senate Unity Forum, have resumed moves to unseat Bukola Saraki as Nigeria’s Senate President.

Following the prospective resumption of his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, the calls for his resignation and clamour for his impeachment have yet again, resurfaced.

The Supreme Court had on Friday, ruled that Saraki’s trial at the CCT should proceed as scheduled.

Saraki is being tried on 13 counts of false assets declaration- offences he allegedly committed during his stint as Kwara governor between 2003-2011.

Punch Newspapers reports that the Ahmed Lawan-led Senate Unity Forum, would launch a call for the recall of their colleagues who are proponents of Saraki as Senate President, in spite of his trial at the CCT.

Senator Ahmed Lawan had last year tussled with Saraki for the control of the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

A member of the pro-Lawan group was quoted to have said: “Although, we do not have the numerical strength to remove the man, in the days ahead, we are reaching out to senators in the other camp. We will make them see why Saraki should resign because of the integrity of the senate.”

“This is besides calling on Nigerians to recall their representatives, who fail to mount pressure on Saraki to resign. It is not a question of impeachment, but insisting on the man’s resignation.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the SUF, Senator Kabir Marafa, was quoted to have said that the group expects Saraki to voluntarily resign.

“If the senate president refused to step aside, we expect Nigerians especially those who voted for us to represent them at the senate to ask questions. We expect them to ask us why we failed to take action despite the bad image that the development is creating for the federal parliament.”

“However, if the senate president refuses to resign and neither the leadership nor the entire Senate mounts any pressure on him to do so, then we would call on Nigerians to recall all their representatives in the Senate because we have failed in our responsibilities.”
